Latest Updates from Our Project:

Hello Heroes!

The PM will close soon. This is your second notice that we plan to close the Pledge Manager on 1st Aug and we will charge you shortly afterwards. Please complete your pledge as soon as possible.

What happens if you don’t? Getting your game to you becomes really inconvenient for us. We will have to make a lot of manual changes to the outstanding pledges and that takes time away from us working on this project. If you are really late, it may delay you getting your rewards and increase your shipping costs if we have to arrange a special shipment for you.

Middara: Unintentional Malum Act 1
Middara: Unintentional Malum Act 1

Back when we worked on The Order of Vampire Hunters, we had the pleasure to work with Brooklynn Lundberg at Succubus Publishing. Their character Nyx, from Middara, made an appearance in OVH as a character that could be played as a Hero or a Vampire. Cool.

When we collaborate with other companies, one of the fun things we often do is to swap a copy of our games. For the first time ever, I was not interested in taking the free copy. “Why not?” you ask. I was already a backer and it was such a great campaign that I really wanted to contribute! Even though they struggled with a few issues, they always came across as a really genuine bunch of guys, doing their absolute best for their backers. And it’s happening again, I am a happy backer on their second Kickstarter.

Middara: Unintentional Malum Act 2

To call Middara a dungeon crawl does not do it justice. It’s an epic adventure, with a sprawling narrative, memorable heroes and villains with an ultramodern JRPG/anime styling. This strategic co-op game has been a hit on our table since it arrived a month or two ago.

So what are they doing this time? Their new project is huge, adding two more Acts to their story (and two large boxes to my shelf). The narrative driven campaign winds through all 3 Acts. There must be 100s of hours of game play.

We’re talking about it here because Girtiya is making an appearance! To see the details of how she appears in the story, you’ll have to get the game. But you can see from this art that she’ll make a lovely resin mini.

Good news for Dark Rituals miniature fans, you can get this miniature on its own.

Would you like some more art? Hopefully this will keep you going until our next update. Click on the images for larger versions, you don’t want to miss any details.

Welcome Witch Masters!

As always, I’ll start with a reminder about the PM: make your selections. It’s so easy to forget. We plan to finalize and close the Pledge Manager on 1st August. But don’t push things off too long.  If you have lost your survey link you can recover it here:

https://dark-rituals-malleus-maleficarum.backerkit.com

We have more final art, text and layouts. Here's Kenzu the Warrior Monk.  As you can see, we've named all the Heroes to make them more relatable. I think the art looks really good.

We are working our way through tasks systematically. Filippo has spent the last few weeks working on the many encounters you’ll be fighting. I am working hard on the solo mode cards and encounters.

But I guess you are all wondering about the title to the update. Yes! We have started miniature production.

Resin minis are cast in a soft silicon mold that is easy to make but does not last long. PVC minis are cast in a steel mold that is quite hard to make, but lasts a very long time. The production method is quite involved, with both sides making adjustments. For us, we would alter the 3D sculpt a little, while the factory is recutting the mold. As you might imagine, they would be refining details, but there are also many technical changes going on behind the scenes. For example, using the plastic feed channels to create strong supporting sprues around the mini to prevent parts bending as they cool. It’s fascinating watching this take shape.

Anyway, we thought it was important to test how well we could work together. We were very pleased with how this went and we have some photos to share.

The steel molds are really shiny and hard to photograph. But we are really proud of this, so here’s a picture:

The process went really quickly. It took about 2 weeks to make the mold and another 7 days to make 2 small adjustments.  Don’t forget, this is just for 4 miniatures. We still have lots of work to do.

The factory sent us pictures of the first generation of minis. This is before those two rounds of optimization. Here is the lovely Hagatha:

It would not be fair to leave the Heroes with no support. Here’s the Executioner:

We are pleased with both our working relationship with the factory and these miniatures. As a result, we committed to the manufacturing contract with them and we can formally say that production has started! Of course, this is just a small step, there are a little under 100 models to be completed.

Hello Heroes!

We have been hard at work. If I review another card, I will quit the company. But this update is all about eye candy!

Except for this section about the Pledge Manager. Almost three quarters of backers have finalized their pledge. Awesome. But sorry, we have to nag the rest of you to fill your Pledge Manager surveys. You would not believe the number of people that forget. It will be open for at least another month, so there is no rush if you are still trying to make up your mind, or waiting to find the funds. But if you know what you want, fill it out before you forget. If you have lost your survey link you can recover it here:

Remember we said would unlock the last stretch goal if we saw enough late pledges and add-ons in the PM? You’ve done it! Skeetor will be flying around your tabletop.

Okay, let’s get on with the images. The art department has done a wonderful job, it’s almost impossible for me to pick images to show you. To make sure you can see them in all their glory, you can click on them for a larger version.

Let’s start with the core map tiles. Here are all 12 images that you will get on 6 double sided map tiles.

Next up, we have a pair. New art for Golus, the mindless Demon that can be ridden into battle and a render of the mini.

We’ve been working on the minis too, so here are renders of Golus showing the platform with a little more depth to it.

Finally, here is the art for a Mortus, one of the core minions. You’ve seen pictures of this mini many times during the project, so this is a great example of what the final polishing does for the art.

We promise not to be complete strangers.

Pledge Manager is Open For All
almost 5 years ago – Sat, May 18, 2019 at 03:19:11 AM

Hello Heroes!

After a successful trial, the Pledge Manager has been opened for all backers. BackerKit e-mails the invitations in batches, so that spam filters are not triggered. There is no need to contact us immediately if you do not see the e-mail, give it a day or two. Do not forget to check your junk mail or spam folders. Please use this e-mail for Pledge Manager issues.

Many thanks to those backers that completed their surveys. Over half of the 5% test group have already filled out the forms. Here are the results.

We did see one legitimate problem: we did not add the “Almost All In” bundle to the list of add-ons for No Reward ($1) backers. If you are in this category and selected all the individual add-ons, you can save some money by changing to this bundle. We cannot see any backers that have done this.

Two backers asked how to add the Attacking Hordes pledge. As we stated through the FAQ, comments and other channels, the Attacking Hordes pledge, with a discounted Cursed Fjord expansion, was only available to backers during the Kickstarter. If you want The Cursed Fjord expansion, you must take it as an add-on to the Lone Defender Pledge. We really appreciate those backers that committed their support early in the project.

Finally, we made manual changes for backers that had EB pledges, but switched to regular pledges later in the project: we adjusted their final pledge to the appropriate EB version. If you started with one of the two EB pledges and ended the project with a regular Lone Defender or Attacking Hordes pledge, we should have switched you. Contact us at the support email if you think we missed you.

Comments from a small number of backers have made it clear that they do not see the advantages of BackerKit’s payment method. We’ll spell them out so that everyone can take advantage.

Some backers want to add some items now, pay for them now, and add more in the future if they are able. This is possible in some PM platforms that charge you when you finalize your pledge. With BackerKit, you are free to add some items now, and add more in the future. Rather than being forced to pay for this first selection on your next CC bill, you are free to save that money any way you want to. In your bank account, your wallet or your sock drawer. If it is important to you to pay for these items immediately, simply overpay your CC bill, although we recommend you hang on to the money. So you can add items over time and there is more flexibility in how you manage your payment.

But you can do more. Since you have not paid, you can simply remove items from the PM if you need the money for something else. We hope that none of our backers have any hardship, financial or otherwise, but we live in an imperfect world and problems arise.

A final advantage comes from a combination of addition and removal. Sometime in the future, if you find you are able to make a larger pledge, with BackerKit you will be able to remove the individual items and add the Almost All-In Bundle and take advantage of the savings. This bundle was a common request from backers during the campaign and we are pleased that BackerKit makes it easy for backers to build up to this option gradually.

We will give everyone clear warning of when we will close the PM so that you can make any last minute adjustments.

The Pledge Manager is Opening!
almost 5 years ago – Wed, May 08, 2019 at 10:07:37 PM

Welcome Witch Masters!

The Pledge Manager will open almost immediately. It will start with invitations to a small number of backers and once we see that it is working well, we will let you know and invite everyone.  This is a good time to explain what you will see.  Let’s start with a summary for experienced Kickstarter users, before we provide more details for new backers.

If you are part of the test group, you will be sent an invitation to complete the BackerKit-based Pledge Manager at the e-mail address used by your Kickstarter account. Right now we are only sending invitations to 5% of our backers. Check your inbox, check your spam, but do not worry if you do not see the mail now: most of you will not.

There are many combinations of pledge, add-ons, and shipping destinations. It all looks good to us and if the first few users do not see issues, we will open it up to everyone very soon. If you do see a problem, please contact us at:

Do not worry, we are sure we can address any issue you see.

If you have used BackerKit before, there are no surprises. You can tell us exactly which add-ons you want now. If you want to select more items than you originally pledged for, no problem, we’ll just charge you the extra at the end. Everyone will need to pay shipping too.

The Pledge Manager will be open for at least 2 months. You will not get charged until it closes. We will post an update before we close it, so you will not be surprised. We will leave the address section unlocked so that you can change your address even after the PM is locked down.

Detailed Guide

If you are a novice Kickstarter user, don’t worry, you will recognize and feel at home with the Pledge Manager very quickly. It has a simple web interface where you specify exactly which items you want. You will be credited the full amount you pledged during the campaign and can pay extra if you want more add-ons than you had originally planned. The Pledge Manager knows the size and weight of your items and your location and will calculate the shipping for you. You will not be charged until the Pledge Manager closes. Your order is not finalized until that point, so you can keep making changes if you want to.

Let’s walk through a few options. We’ll start with a common scenario, the Early Bird Attacking Hordes pledge.

Here’s the start screen, showing the pledge that you selected. There are two small points of interest:

1) You can see the actual amount you pledged during the campaign. If this is more than the pledge amount you can use the extra for add-ons or shipping.

2) You need to set your location. This is used in the shipping calculation, so it is important.

If you want to get started with filling it, click the giant green “Get Started!” button.

Your first chore will be to answer a few questions about languages. This is not linked to your location and you can choose any language you want. The question is asked for each item you are getting, so you can see that an EB Attacking Hordes backers will be asked the question 4 times. Don’t worry, it will only take a second. Here is the result when you’ve answered four questions:

All four questions are checked off and we are ready to use the “Next: Add-ons” button to get to the next screen.

The next screen is where all the action is, so it’s much too big to show in one go. This is where you get to browse the add-ons and put them in your pledge. They are organized into different sections (1), and you can use the filters in the drop down control (2) to help find them. But by now I am sure you know what you want and they are not hard to find.

On the right (3), you will see all the payment details. This section is dynamic and will update as you add more items. Let’s do that now.

To look at something in more detail, click on its image, or on the “View Options” button. Here, I have pressed the “View Options” button on The Spider’s Brood.

For many of the add-Ons, even the small ones, we will need you to select a language (1). You can then “Add to cart”. (2).

Here’s a close up of the payment section, now that I have added The Spider’s Brood. The add-on is showing in the list of items (1) and can be removed with the trash can icon (2). The shipping has been updated (3) and there is a balance due (4).

That’s enough pictures for the moment. Here are a few more details:

* Some add-ons have an “Add to Cart” button, which adds them directly to the cart without showing the details. We can do this if there is no language question. Clicking on the image will always let you have a closer look at the item.

* You are in charge of selecting how many copies of each item you want. For many of you, the most you will want is one copy (perhaps more of the dice packs). However, a few of you might be picking items for friends and so might get multiple copies. The important thing is that you check carefully: if you have a free Early Bird Swordsman, you probably do not want to get another one. Similarly, if you do have a regular Lone Defender pledge and add the Almost All In add-on, remember it does not add everything and you may want to get a Swordsman and The Cursed Fjord add-ons.

* You can add extra pledges as add-ons. They will come with Stretch Goals.

* Don’t forget there is no Attacking Hordes Pledge. If you want to get the equivalent items, take a Lone Defender Pledge and add the Cursed Fjord add-on. You will get all the stretch goals, but as we said in the Kickstarter FAQ, The Cursed Fjord expansion is now $50.

A final note, you will not see a separate box for The Cursed Fjord-specific stretch goals mentioned in the PM. Don’t worry, we have not forgotten about them! They are packed in the Cursed Fjord box.

Once you have selected all the items you want, press the “Next” button below the payment section. It will take you to the address screen:

I have deleted the information here, but it will be filled in with your address that we exported from Kickstarter. You can change it or update it if necessary. You can figure this one out on your own, I am sure.

“Next” takes you to a Confirmation screen that is really large!

This has a great summary of the information you have entered.

1) Payment section

2) Your shipping address.

3) Then the items in your pledge and

4) any add-ons you selected.

5) A payment section for you to pay the balance.

Let us draw your attention to just one line in the payment section (1). You are not charged when you fill this in. You are charged when we close the Pledge Manager, which will be in at least 2 months and we will give you a clear warning so you know the payment is going through.

Depending on your pledge, you will see slightly different screens when you use the Pledge Manager, however, we are sure this guide will help all our backers.  Backers that pledged $1 and selected no reward will see the biggest differences: you will not see the initial “Answer a few questions …” page. Instead you will skip ahead to the Add-Ons page, where you can start making selections.

You will be able to make any changes you want to, if you log out and log back into the Pledge Manager, until we close it. Nothing is set in stone. However, if you do not complete it before we close it, there may be some delay shipping your rewards to you! There may also be changes to the shipping cost. Finally, our customs friendly shipping solutions only apply to the normal bulk shipment. If we have to make a special shipment for you after our regular fulfillment, you will need to pay all fees, including customs fees if any are due.  Do not forget to fill it out! Don’t worry, we will send you plenty of reminders.

If you have questions, try asking them here. Many backers have used BackerKit several times and will be able to help you out quickly. You can message us on Kickstarter or e-mail us at:

We will post another update soon when we go live for all backers. There is no need to contact us yet saying you have not received an invitation.
